That’s the skills gap estimated in the construction industry by 2028 according to Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
This skills gaps has a real negative impact. For example, delay to projects, house building and stagnating economic growth.
The work of Constructing Change is critical to solve the skills gap. There is a whole pool of talent historically disengaged. And Constructing Change is Inspiring this untapped market of talent to see the incredible opportunities that a career in construction poses. By engaging new talent our industry benefits from the talent and the diversity they bring.
I am personally excited for the change. More diversity of thoughts, More innovation, More talents and More Skills. This is a mission I have been aligned with as a STEM advocate and BBC Science TV presenter where I look to inspire young people who may become the future of STEM professions. Outreach and advocacy are important in illuminating these professions to new people, who due to economic background, regional deprivation that impact their schooling, parents and family not informed about these careers would never find about our industry.
I always wonder: ‘what if the next great engineer, scientist, construction professional of our generation’ is being missed because no one told them about STEM, Construction, and their potential to shape the future is lost to us all.
This always acts as a reminder to why we must go into school, create accessible media that educate, entertains and informs. This helps us have a diverse pool of talent for our industry, remove barriers to social mobility and become more inclusive, engage new communities, build enthusiastic talent increasing retention in our industry and ultimately play a role in someone personal journey of realising their potential.
This is why I support Constructing Change as a steering group member because its mission is essential for the future of our industry.
Constructing Change has a critical role to play in the future pipeline of our industry. There are big ambitions, housing targets to reach, homes and business to reduce the risk of flooding to. This is essential work, important, vital work – The work of construction professionals. And I am proud to be a part of constructing change, and their incredible work drawing in the new generation of construction professionals.
