Educate, Inspire and Empower

Learning in Action Days and the Curriculum for Wales

At Constructing Change, our Learning in Action Days connect young people with live construction projects, providing experiences that are hands-on, inspiring, and directly linked to the new Curriculum for Wales 2022. These days support schools in delivering authentic learning that helps pupils realise the Four Purposes of the curriculum and prepare for life beyond school.

Supporting the Four Purposes

The Curriculum for Wales aims to develop young people who are:

  • Ambitious, capable learners – Pupils see how classroom subjects translate into real-world skills across construction, engineering, and design.
  • Enterprising, creative contributors – Engaging with practical problem-solving and innovation on site builds creativity and adaptability.
  • Ethical, informed citizens – Exposure to sustainable building practices and community impact helps pupils understand their role in creating a better future.
  • Healthy, confident individuals – Learning about workplace wellbeing, teamwork, and resilience nurtures self-confidence and personal growth.

Linking to Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs)

Our site visits complement and enrich the six AoLEs by:

  • Science & Technology – Demonstrating engineering, design, and digital technologies in action.
  • Mathematics & Numeracy – Applying concepts such as scale, measurement, and data in real projects.
  • Humanities – Understanding the cultural, social, and environmental impact of infrastructure.
  • Health & Wellbeing – Exploring workplace safety, personal resilience, and teamwork.
  • Languages, Literacy & Communication – Developing communication skills through questioning, presentations, and reflections.
  • Expressive Arts – Encouraging creativity by connecting design and architecture with artistic expression.

Preparing for Future Pathways

Our Learning in Action Days also support the Careers and Work-Related Experiences (CWRE) integral to the Curriculum for Wales by:

  • Providing real insights into diverse career pathways, from apprenticeships to professional roles.
  • Demonstrating the skills employers value most – problem-solving, teamwork, and digital competence.
  • Inspiring pupils to make confident, informed subject and career choices.

Supporting Career Guidance and Employability

Learning in Action Days also align with the National Skills Strategy and the focus on career guidance and work-related learning by:

  • Giving pupils real insight into vocational, apprenticeship, and professional career pathways.
  • Linking education to labour market needs, particularly in construction, engineering, and the built environment.
  • Providing equitable access to relatable role models, raising aspirations, and supporting social mobility.

Why It Matters

The construction sector in Wales is key to the nation’s future – from net zero housing to sustainable transport. By showcasing the breadth of roles and opportunities available, our Learning in Action Days make the curriculum real, raise aspirations, and give pupils the tools to see themselves as the next generation of innovators and changemakers.

Constructing Change is committed to working with Welsh schools, local authorities, and employers to deliver impactful, curriculum-aligned experiences that inspire every learner.
