Educate, Inspire and Empower

Meet Jessica Phillips, Assistant Project Manager, Watertight International

Hi, I’m Jessica, a recent graduate from Edge Hill University, where I earned a degree in Geoenvironmental Hazards. I’ve recently joined Watertight International as a new starter. My passion for natural hazards – particularly flooding, which is so prevalent in the UK – is what inspired me to pursue this career path.

Outside of work, my love for nature continues. I enjoy wild swimming and taking dips in rivers and lakes, no matter the weather – be it sunshine, rain, or even snow! I also love going on walks and hikes, especially in the Peak District.

When it’s time to unwind, you’ll usually find me glued to my electronics – watching Netflix, or getting stuck into some videogames.

Tell Us About Your Career Journey So Far

Pursuing a career, where I could apply my academic knowledge practically, was a clear goal. As Assistant Project Manager in Property Flood Resilience (PFR) at Watertight International I get to apply my knowledge to real-world scenarios, helping make homes more resilient against flood damage. It’s rewarding to be part of a team that’s on the front lines of community protection as I know flooding is and will always be an issue that the UK faces. It allows me to support meaningful projects and work in a field I care deeply about.

After finishing university, I wanted a job that would allow career progression and opportunities to grow and deepen my knowledge and understanding of flooding and flood resilience. Since joining Watertight International, I have been involved and hands on. It is clear that the company wants me to progress as much as I want myself to. The amount of support I have received has been more than I could have asked for and I am excited for my career journey to continue.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like in Your Role?

No two days seem the same! I split my time between the office and on-site locations across the country. In the office, I prepare documents, contact residents about engaging with flood resilience schemes, and join teams calls and meetings on current projects.

Out in the field, I conduct property surveys and ensure that homeowners are satisfied with the work completed. Whether it’s a new survey or post-installation follow-up, each task feels unique because it’s tailored to individual homes, communities, and schemes which keeps things dynamic and engaging.

I was surprised by how collaborative the construction industry is, and how closely you work with other companies.

What Surprises You About Working in Construction?

I was surprised by how collaborative the construction industry is, and how closely you work with other companies. On every site, people from different backgrounds and specialisms come together, openly sharing their expertise to achieve the best results possible. It’s supportive and full of people who genuinely want one another to succeed. You’re encouraged to learn, ask questions, and grow in your role. That sense of teamwork and mentorship makes all the difference, and it’s something I’ve really come to value as a newcomer to the field.

What Advice Would You Give to a Younger You?

Don’t count yourself out before you’ve even tried. Confidence comes from pushing yourself and being open to growth, this means to always aim and reach outside your comfort zone. When opportunities arise, take them, even if they seem scary. The right job might be the one you think you’re not ready for. Trust your instincts, take the leap, and remember, you are far more capable than you think. If you do not value your capabilities, how do you expect others to do so?

You are only as limited as your mind believes.
