Educate, Inspire and Empower

Learning in Action Days and the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence

At Constructing Change, our Learning in Action Days are designed to inspire, educate, and empower young people by opening the doors to live construction sites and projects. In Scotland, these experiences connect directly with the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE), supporting schools in delivering broad, balanced learning that equips pupils with skills for life, learning, and work.

How Our Days Support the Four Capacities

The Curriculum for Excellence is built around developing young people as:

  • Successful Learners – Pupils see real-world applications of STEM subjects and problem-solving in action.
  • Confident Individuals – Meeting relatable role models on site helps young people build self-belief and resilience.
  • Responsible Citizens – Engagement with sustainable construction practices shows how industry tackles climate change and benefits communities.
  • Effective Contributors – Team-based activities encourage collaboration, communication, and leadership.

Links to Experiences and Outcomes (Es & Os)

Our site visits provide practical, hands-on learning that enhances classroom teaching across subject areas, including:

  • Sciences & Technologies – Exploring engineering, design, and innovation on live projects.
  • Mathematics – Seeing how measurement, scale, and data are applied in real projects.
  • Social Studies – Understanding the impact of infrastructure on communities, the environment, and local economies.
  • Health & Wellbeing – Experiencing workplace safety, teamwork, and career resilience.
  • Literacy & Numeracy – Strengthening communication skills through presentations, questioning, and reflective activities.

Preparing Pupils for the World of Work

Learning in Action Days strongly support the Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) agenda by:

  • Providing meaningful career insights before subject choices are made.
  • Showcasing pathways into apprenticeships, further education, and professional roles.
  • Highlighting the breadth of opportunities in construction, from digital design and sustainability, to engineering, trades, and project management.

Supporting Career Guidance and Employability

Learning in Action Days also align with the National Skills Strategy and the focus on career guidance and work-related learning by:

  • Giving pupils real insight into vocational, apprenticeship, and professional career pathways.
  • Linking education to labour market needs, particularly in construction, engineering, and the built environment.
  • Providing equitable access to relatable role models, raising aspirations, and supporting social mobility.

Why It Matters

Construction is one of Scotland’s most diverse and vital sectors. By connecting pupils directly with projects and people, our Learning in Action Days bring the curriculum to life, help raise aspirations, and create clear links between school learning and future career pathways.

Constructing Change is committed to working with Scottish schools, local authorities, and employers to make sure young people are inspired, included, and ready for the future world of work.
