Educate, Inspire and Empower
Journey
I’ve worked in nearly every other sector before joining construction such as care, office administrations and childcare. I was on a wondering path, never truly settled or challenged enough. I had no true passion other than driving my car, my dad inspired me to combine driving and work which kickstarted this wonderful journey.
Work
I have two reasons why I enjoy this job more than any other. Firstly, the people! I meet people from all backgrounds and each with different stories. You create a family with these people, it’s exciting to experience a different side of life with them. Working mainly outside, building things which will have all our marks imprinted on the landscape around us for years to come. Learning together about the work itself and the earth around us. This leads me into my second reason which is that you’re constantly learning and growing. I believe in continuous growth, both professionally and personally. Every day brings new opportunities to learn, whether it’s mastering aspects of my role or discovering more about myself. Both reasons make me proud to wake up and go do what I love.
Inspiration
What I think young people should know about careers in construction is just that, it is a true career. I find that there is a bit of stigma about it and more viewed as just a job rather than something you can build a career and future out of. This couldn’t be further from the truth! There is so much more to construction than people give it credit for; there is a ladder to climb if you choose that’s what you want. Working in construction there’s so much choice; you choose how far you go! There are so many avenues you can go down with all the support you can wish for to find your right place. With the right attitude the sky is your limit! In addition, construction is a great industry to work in because not only is it a career it is also a brilliant skill. A skill you can take with you all over the world and one that the world will always need.
Future
My advice would be to go in with an open mind because with an open mind comes countless opportunities. There may be some fear but lean into the fear, feel it and do it anyway! Majority of the time once you get past those barriers you come to the realisation that the only person that’s standing in your way is you!
What makes someone successful isn’t just the work you produce, yes that is a major factor however more importantly it is the determination, motivation and willingness to learn that will get you just that bit further.
For fun
What I wish I had known at 15 is that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. Setting goals is important; however, it’s the journey to those goals that’s the fun part, make sure you take time to sit back so you can appreciate and enjoy.
