Educate, Inspire and Empower
Educate, Inspire and Empower
Flood resilience is becoming increasingly critical across the South West, and for me, it’s more than just part of my job. I was inspired to be part of the solution. As an an Agent at Kier Natural Resources, I’m helping to build flood and tidal defence schemes that protect communities, homes and businesses from flooding.
My role focuses on managing the physical build of flood and tidal defence projects. No two days are ever the same. One day I might be planning works for a reinforced concrete foundation pour, while the next could be spent communicating future works with clients and designers. It’s this constant variety, combined with teamwork and problem-solving, that makes construction such an exciting industry for me.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing tangible progress on site. Watching a project transform from a typical ‘field land’ area into an asset that delivers real benefits to communities brings a strong sense of pride and job satisfaction.
I initially studied Forensic Science, drawn to its problem-solving elements. While I enjoyed the analytical side of the subject, I soon realised I wanted to apply those skills on a largerscale.
Inspired by the need for improved flood resilience in my home region, I made the decision to move into construction. The industry’s openness and flexibility made this transition a positive experience, and early voluntary work experience on a new road bypass project in Hayle, Cornwall further cemented my passion for the sector.
To build a strong foundation for my career, I completed a Foundation Year studying A Level Maths, Mechanics and Physics before going on to achieve a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Civil and Coastal Engineering at Plymouth University. As part of my degree, I also undertook an industrial year placement in contracting on a new highway scheme, gaining valuable experience and insights.
I’m particularly proud to be part of the Environment Agency Collaborative Delivery Framework, which delivers flood and tidal defence schemes across the South West. Being involved in multiple projects under this framework allows me to see first-hand how construction can make a meaningful difference, protecting communities from the increasing risks of flooding.
Beyond the engineering and construction elements, I value the wide range of skills my role has helped me develop. From environmental and ecological awareness to communicating with residents and stakeholders, construction has broadened my skill set far beyond what I initially expected.
For me, construction is a career worth pursuing. I believe the industry offers variety, progression and long-term opportunities, with demand for skilled professionals only set to increase. You can work on buildings, structures, bridges, tunnels, highways, rail, airports, renewable energies, flood and tidal defence schemes, mining, shafts, ground engineering and so many other sectors.
The breadth of within construction means there’s a place for everyone.
I’m also keen to challenge common misconceptions about the industry. Construction, in my view, is not limited to one stereotype, it’s an inclusive sector that welcomes people of all backgrounds and skill sets.
Looking to the future, my ambition is to continue delivering flood and tidal defence schemes across the South West, helping to protect communities My advice to anyone considering a career in construction is simple: ask questions and try to gain site experience. It’s the best way to understand the industry and the opportunities it can offer.
Motivated, social and supportive, I’m a strong advocate for construction as a career that combines technical challenge with real-world impact. Outside of work, I enjoy water sports, swimming and running across the South West.
